For more than 30 years, award-winning journalist Michael Pollan has explored the intersection of humans and nature—including groundbreaking probes of the food we eat. The NYT bestselling author of “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” teaches how to ditch fad diets and eat with more intentionally.
Food is personal: What people eat reflects their cultures, relationships, and, often, their relative societal privileges.
As a magazine editor planting fruit and vegetable seeds in his Connecticut backyard in the late 1990s, he began to mull over how humans relate to the natural world— and the many organisms that feed us. Since then, questions about humankind’s relationship to food have led him from his small garden to vast feedlots and factory farms across the United States, uncovering the idiosyncrasies, injustices, and possibilities of America’s modern food system.
Michael has written more than nine books, including The Omnivore’s Dilemma, In Defense of Food, Food Rules, and Cooked. Some of his recent works—including This Is Your Mind on Plants, How to Change Your Mind, and the audiobook Caffeine—explore humans’ relationships with plants that contain mind-altering chemicals.
The Omnivore’s Dilemma
When Michael published The Omnivore’s Dilemma in 2006, it caused deep cultural reverberations. The book closely examined animal welfare in the meat industry, monocrops and pesticides in agriculture, the chemicals prevalent in most ultra-processed foods, and the corporate consolidation behind most American food products.
Defence of Food
In his 2008 book, In Defense of Food, he developed three simple guidelines.
1. Eat food.
2. Not too much.
3. Mostly plants.
