Giannis: The Marvelous Journey is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the extraordinary odyssey of NBA mega-star Giannis Antetokounmpo from an impoverished childhood in Greece as the son of Nigerian immigrants to the top of the basketball world. The Documentary premiered on February 19 exclusively on Prime Video. The documentary was tough for me to finish because I could feel what Giannis was expressing in the doc. Going through the grief of losing his dad, hate as an immigrant and having to navigate a tough world. I cried a lot watching the documentary; it was a tough watch but a very inspiring story.
Five minutes into the documentary, I was already crying like a baby. That I adore Giannis Antetokounmpo is an understatement. Besides his parents being from Nigeria, I love what Giannis stands for. He is one of the most hardworking and deliberate NBA superstars. I February 2023, I had Mirin Fader’s Giannis: The Improbable Rise of an NBA Champion. The book chronicles his upbringing in Greece, his youth basketball journey, entering the 2013 NBA, winning back-to-back NBA MVPs and finally winning the NBA championship and final MVP in 2021. The book was excellent and increased my appreciation for how Giannis carries himself.
- Act II: Philotimo – The Greek philosophy of loyalty and honour; living with integrity.
- Act III: Areti – Reaching one’s full potential, both in character and in skill
